What are the Orioles' top hitting prospects working on at Norfolk as they wait for a big league opportunity?
Gunnar Henderson, Kyle Stowers, and Jordan Westburg can all help the Orioles right now. Until they get called up, what are their development goals at Norfolk?
The growth mindset the Orioles so strongly value is the reason why prospects like Gunnar Henderson, Kyle Stowers, and Jordan Westburg have the minor league resumes to warrant consideration for a spot in the major league lineup.
It’s also, the club hopes, helping those players attack what remains of their developmental goals for the season with the end goal of it all so close—and the clamor for top prospects to join the surging Orioles for the pennant race grows louder by the day.
“All we have is what’s in front of us today, so that’s the message,” Norfolk hitting coach Tim Gibbons told me over the phone Wednesday. “We’re not worried about when the call’s coming. They’re not worried about any of that outside noise. How are we going to win today? How are we going to attack this pitcher today, and how are we going to get better today? That’s the main focus for all of those guys.”
In saying as much, which is really all a coach can say about such things, he touched on the reason I wanted to connect with him. How have these players gotten better since they got to Norfolk? And with seemingly so many of their developmental goals looking like successes for the season, what’s left for them to work on there if they aren’t going to be in the big leagues?
