The Orioles' full spring training roster shows they're preparing for any and all outcomes in 2023
Having over 70 players in camp, and no more than a handful without a path to making the majors this year, means the Orioles aren't leaving much to chance this spring.
When MLB’s owners decided to lock out the players last winter, the impact was a shortened spring training that kept the camp size relatively small and left many of the team’s top prospects across town at the minor league complex. Same went in the COVID-impacted spring of 2021, when they kept many of the younger players and those who weren’t going to make the team at Twin Lakes Park under the “camp reserve” designation.
So to say the Orioles haven’t had a collection of talent like the one Thursday’s announced camp roster solidified under one roof at the Ed Smith Stadium complex is a bit misleading since they never really had the chance. But if they’d had the chance to do this before and hadn’t — and my gut says they wouldn’t have — then a camp roster like this would mean something.
