Prior to Sunday’s cathartic eighth-inning Orioles outburst, one that led to the funniest kind of series win (one against the Yankees), the singular theme of the young season outside how absolutely miserable this could be without John Means was the Orioles’ inability to come through with runners in scoring position.

That five-run, two-out rally was important for a lot of reasons, but only made a slight dent in one of the largest deficiencies emerging on this club. And that what makes it a prime candidate for a Monday-morning deep dive – the first of many possible recurring features I’ll be trying out over the coming weeks and months but absolutely not anything like the Orioles reset, let me tell you.

The raw numbers of what the Orioles have done with runners in scoring position should be familiar by now: even with their little outburst Sunday, they’re 10-for-86 with 40 strikeouts with runners in scoring position. But I wanted to see how much they were actually losing out on in failing so often in those situations, so in another effort that will surely earn derision from the actual numbers folks inside the Orioles, I tried to quantify it.
