On caring, not caring, and the intersection of two former Orioles top picks
Cody Sedlock was forsaken in the old Orioles' set-up. The new one is being overprotective of Grayson Rodriguez. The latter is obviously preferable, but nothing is perfect.
Two quick stories. Well, at least I hope they’re quick, and bring us to a larger point about caring about players and not caring about them.
Near the end of the 2018 season, I went to see a Cody Sedlock rehab start at Aberdeen and do a story on where the Orioles’ former first round pick was mentally and physically. I remember his velocity was down, in the mid-to-high 80s, but there was a very effective changeup and breaking ball on display in that brief outing.
When we caught up for our interview, he told me how he was dealing with thoracic outlet syndrome and decided against surgery and just wanted to pitch again. I wanted to verify it with someone in the organization, and when I did, I was essentially told to write what Sedlock told me because said club official didn’t know what was going on with him and had nothing to say about him anymore.
