Can the Orioles' trade hauls over the last few years give any hints as to what they could be seeking before the deadline?
College pitchers, international teenagers, and high-minors infielders were regulars in Mike Elias' early trade returns. Now that those areas are well-stocked, where else might they turn?
For as long as the Orioles have been making trades under Mike Elias, they’ve been targeting three types of players: recently drafted college pitchers, upper-minors infielders, and teenage international talent.
The resulting acquisitions, north of 20 players, largely track with the Orioles as a whole during the time. There hasn’t been a lot to show for it at the major league level, even as they’ve served to make their prospect base more diverse and talented.
Over the next week-plus, though, the Orioles will be in the business of having these kinds of trade discussions again.
Do they need to load up on other teams’ (read: the Angels’) college pitching draftees when, after this draft specifically, they have so many of their own? Is there as much of a need to compensate for a lack of international signings when this front office’s players are matriculating stateside? And if not, where are areas they can look to bolster their depth?
